Flipped Classroom: Elements and principles sketchbook assignment part 1

Student Examples:

Create a "picture dictionary" in your sketchbook defining the elements and principles of design. Here are some things to think about including the requirements:

1. Each page should be dedicated to one element or principle. In total you will have 15 pages. Start with the elements of art and then do the principles. Also label each section accordingly.

2. Think of each page as a work of art by filling up the whole composition. (Placement of objects on a picture plane)

3. Each element and principle need to have the complete definition somewhere on the page.

4. Each element and principle need two completely different visual representations creatively woven into the composition. Please use a different medium and design for each example.

Elements and Principle of Design:

Elements of Art

1. Line-The path of a moving point. Mark making that communicates something being actual, implied, vertical, horizontal, diagonal and/or contour.

2. Shape-Something that appears to be flat or two-dimensional that can be either organic or geometric. It may have a partial or whole outline.

3. Form-Something that has height, width and depth or the illusion of being three-dimensional.

4. Space-The area around a person, place or thing. Also known as a resting place for the eye in a piece of art.

5. Texture-The real or implied surface quality of something. It can be smooth, rough, or other.

6. Value-The shade of something on a scale from light to dark including any tones in between.

7. Color- What is seen when light reflects off of a surface and is used to define specific hues.

8. Size- The measurements or boundaries of something. What something or someone looks like compared to something or someone else.

Principles of Design

1. Variety- Use of different elements of art in a composition. (Line, color, size, texture, shape)

2. Repetition-The careful placement of repeated elements of art sometimes creating movement. (Line, color, size, texture, shape)

3. Balance-A combination of elements that creates a completeness or equilibrium. (Symmetrical, asymmetrical, and radial)

4. Contrast- Combining two or more elements together that are quite different creating a visual vibration.

5. Unity-An overall balance of elements in a composition where each element works together harmoniously.

6. Emphasis-An area in a composition that is a focal point because it stands out against the rest of the elements.

7. Harmony- Using elements in a way to accentuate the whole composition where elements are smoothly combined
